Clerics join Iran's anti-government protests

In a blatant act of defiance, a group of Mullahs took to the streets of Tehran, to protest election results that returned incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Whether these clerics voted for Ahmadinejad or one of the opposition candidates is unknown. What is important here, is the decision to march against the will of Iran's supreme leader who called the results final and declared demonstrations illegal.

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mullahs rule supreme. They are the country's conservative clerics; the guardians of the Islamic revolution and its ideologies. They're loyal only to God and Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Yet the crackdown continues. Even soccer players who simply wore green armbands have been banned for life by Iran.

While this is not our issue to get directly involved in, it's one that I think we should show support for, as the President has done clearly in speeches, Twitter posts, and official statements.

However, what I think really needs to happen is, honestly, another revolution. The Islamic revolution was a major mistake, and I think now people in Iran are realizing it. The Shah may not have been perfect, but people in Iran are now wondering if they really are better off...and largely realizing that they are not. Women and young people especially are ready for significant change.

It's up to them. Now is the time. The question is will the protests fade, or evolve into full scale regime change in Iran?
