The first rule of Bush fight club...is you don't say bad things about Bush.Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House gallery after refusing to cover up a T-shirt bearing an anti-war slogan before President Bush's State of the Union address.
According to a blog post on Michael Moore's Web site attributed to Sheehan, the T-shirt said, "2,245 Dead. How many more?" -- a reference to the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq.
"She was asked to cover it up. She did not," said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman.
---
Sheehan, who became a vocal war opponent after her son was killed in Iraq, was an invited guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, who has called for a withdrawal of troops in Iraq and supports legislation for the creation of a Department of Peace.
Now say what you want about Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, or members of Congress like Woolsey...but Sheehan was not arrested for being in the chamber illegally (she was a legally invited guest), and she was not arrested for being a security risk (if she got in there, I'm sure she had to pass more security checks than any ten airline passengers).
She was arrested for a statement on her shirt that the Bush Administration did not like.
Let that sink in...an American citizen who broke no laws was charged with "unlawful conduct" for wearing a t-shirt with an anti-war sloagan. An American citizen who was also a legally invited guest of a U.S. Congresswoman.
Just one more indication that the Bush government is one where questioning and dissent are not tolerated in any form.
Read Cindy's own account...and then see if you think her arrest was justified. I don't. I'm ashamed our government would resort to a new low like that.
Of course the right is outright LYING about what Cindy Sheehan did. Read Michelle Malkin's post on the SOTU:
Update, 900pm eastern: CNN is reporting that Capitol Police arrested Sheehan after she unfurled an anti-war banner inside the House chamber.
She took off a jacket while seated prior to the speech, and had a tshirt on with the number of war dead. She did not unfurl "an anti-war banner". Malkin, as usual, is a LIAR.
Here's a screenshot of Malkin's site, for proof after she edits her obvious falsehood.
