We dropped Kinsey off at Chuck-E-Cheese for a birthday party around
noon today. Jane and I then went to a Chinese restaurant in Aiea for
lunch. I might add the food was outstanding (I had lobster with
cashews and stir-fry, rice, and some gaigee, which I'm probably not
spelling right.)
It was something that happened while we were there that bugged me. A
woman came in, dressed somewhat shabbily and not really fully
coherent; she sat at a table behind us and from what we heard between
her and the waitress there was some distrust of her paying. She only
had $2.
The restaurant's manager (I believe, or at least a supervisor)
actually came to our table to apologize, telling us she is a problem
in the area; her and a middle aged man hang around the mall area
there, and she often comes in (he seldom does, sits outside and glares
instead), eats but many times doesn't pay.
I observed them for a while; the man stayed outside, and he looked
very mean/angry. She got a small order of something, then grabbed a
bowl of rice from a table when the customers there left. Jane and I
talked, and Jane's theory was she was a prostitute (and the man her
pimp); observation seemed to bear this out.
She was a sad case...she was wearing a belly-baring shirt and it was
apparent she was pregnant, and she didn't look too well kept. Her
manner suggested drug use.
We gave her half our order of gaigee (they are pork filled fried
wonton type appetizers); it looked like she hadn't eaten much lately,
and we were just going to take them home for leftover anyway. Well,
shortly after giving this to her (and her getting the rice from the
other table) the man came in. We were leaving, but on the way past
the window by their table I noticed he ate a good portion of what we
had given her and what she'd gotten from the empty table. He looked
pissed off (the store manager indicated this was normal for him).
I was pissed off after considering the situation. I'm sure this guy
treats her like shit (I wouldn't be surprised if he beats her, and
there is certainly some heavy drug and/or alcohol use going on. He
looked clean and was decently dressed, but she looked like she was
homeless. And the fact that she was pregnant makes me shudder to
think how the child will grow up, if it even survives.
That our society lets this pretty much run rampant (it's not an
isolated issue, the homeless and, to a lesser degree, prostitution
problems here are island-wide) is a sad indicator of where our
priorities are screwed up.
